Reformer Pilates exercises will focus on helping you strengthen your core, build lean muscle, learn classical Pilates moves on the Reformer. Reformer Pilates is done using the Pilates Reformer machine and is generally considered to be a more intense workout that mat-based Pilates because the machine adds resistance to the Pilates exercises.
What Is a Pilates Reformer?
The Pilates Reformer is a machine that is shaped like a bed-like frame with a flat platform on top, called the carriage, which rolls back and forth on wheels that are within the frame. The carriage is attached to one end of the Pilates Reformer via springs. The springs permit differing levels of resistance as the carriage is pulled or pushed along the frame. To keep the individual from sliding off of the Reformer, the carriage has shoulder blocks.
The is also a footbar at one end of the Reformer as well as long straps with handles attached to the top part of the frame. Essentially body weight and resistance are the two main factors that determine how difficult it is to move the carriage. As your body size and skill level changes, the Reformer parts are designed to be adjusted.
The Evolution of Reformer Pilates
The Pilates Reformer is a traditional piece of Pilates equipment which actually dates back to the original Pilates studio in New York, USA from the 1920's and was actually designed by Joseph Pilates himself.
Reformer Pilates was originally used to break down the flowing movements that are involved in mat-based Pilates in order to help individuals become strong enough to do matwork effectively. However, it has evolved into its own practice thanks to the athletic and toning benefits that it offers.
Reformer Pilates can also be used as a cross training tool especially for sports. It works by helping an athlete to strengthen their core while also promoting muscle endurance, balance, coordination, stability, and strength.
